The following items must have the corresponding attributes in order to comply with Timaru District Council Trade Waste Bylaws.
Grease Traps
- All premises with a grease trap must hold a current Trade Waste Consent. An application for this can be obtained from the Timaru District Council by contacting the Trade Waste Officer on 03 687 7200.
- All non-domestic premises that are likely to discharge grease must have a grease trap installed.
- A service contract is to be maintained for the maintenance of the grease trap. For a standard 40 hour per week operation the minimum cleaning frequency is 3 monthly.
- For new grease traps sizing is to be agreed prior installation with the Trade Waste Unit. The minimum size is to be 500L, any exceptions to this size must be authorized by the Trade Waste Unit.
- No new enzyme activated grease converters are to be installed unless specifically authorized by the Trade Waste Unit. For premises that already have these in place they must have screening for solids removal and an auto-doser for dosing of the enzyme.
Truck Wash Facilities
- All Commercial Truck Wash owners / operators must hold a current Trade Waste Consent. An application for this can be obtained from the Timaru District Council by contacting the Trade Waste Officer on 03 687 7200.
- They will also require consents for sewer and storm water connections from the Timaru District Council.
- Any Wash Pads over 10m2 must be roofed in order to prevent storm water entering the sewer network. The alternative to this is the installation of an approved “First Flush” system to separate wash water from storm water. Approval must be sought on the type and model prior to installation.
- All Pads must have a stone / grit trap to remove solid materials from the waste stream. A removable grate above this will be required to allow for solids to be removed to landfill.
- All Pads must have an oil interceptor (minimum 1500L) prior to the waste stream entering the sewer. Examples of these can be found on the Humes website.
- The oil interceptors must be regularly serviced by an approved operator to prevent any oil/grease residues and heavy metal laden sludge’s entering the sewer network. This must be a minimum of 6 monthly.
- All water lines feeding / reaching the wash down pad must be fitted with a suitable “Backflow prevention” valve in order to protect potable water supplies. Talk to your plumber about what is required or alternatively for any queries about these valve requirements you could contact the Water Services Technician at Timaru District Council on 03 687 7200.
Please note: These requirements relate only to the Trade Waste Consent conditions . All building design and consent requirements will also need to be met and applied for.
