Operating a Mobile Food Business
Mobile food businesses are subject to the same food rules as food businesses operating from commercial premises. See 'Running a Food Business'
Mobile operators are required to register with their local council where their home base is located in. Once registered with the home base council, mobile food operators can travel and sell food in any other district in New Zealand provided they meet local public trading rules and get approval for each trading site.
See further details about trading in the South Canterbury areas:
- Timaru District - Trading in Public Places
- Waimate District - Trading in Public Places
- Mackenzie District - Mobile Shop and Traders
Mobile Cross Boundary Traders - Template Food Control Plans
If your food business trades, or may trade, beyond the Timaru/Mackenzie/Waimate District Council areas, Council will no longer be able to verify your food business as part of the MPI and Food Act 2014 registration requirements.
If your food business does, or will, trade across Council boundaries, you are now required to engage a recognised third-party verification agency/person to undertake the verification of your template Food Control Plan.
Please be aware, TDC/MDC/WDC is not a recognised third party verification agency.
You can find the list of all recognised third-party verification agencies via the following MPI web link:
