Snow and cold conditions across region
Timaru Civil Defence advise that due to recent snowfall local residents should be aware that there have been a number of road closures in several areas including behind Pleasant Point and Geraldine, and in the Mackenzie District. There are also a number of power outages in some of these areas. Some schools are closed and school bus services cancelled.
The Geraldine Civil Defence Area Headquarters has been activated at the Timaru District Council Service Centre in Geraldine.
Residents in snow-affected areas are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, keep warm and ensure the welfare of family and neighbours. Roads will be icy even when cleared, and extreme caution must be taken if driving is necessary.
The Timaru District Council Emergency Operations Centre will continue to monitor the situation.
