The Timaru District Council has today announced the appointment of Bede Carran as its new Chief Executive.
Mr Carran will take up the post in early December, replacing current Chief Executive, Peter Nixon, who is retiring at that time.
Mr Carran said: “I am excited by the opportunity and pleased to remain in South Canterbury.”
Timaru District Mayor, Damon Odey welcomed the appointment, saying Mr Carran would be a great addition to the team at the council.
“We are looking forward to welcoming Bede to Timaru, and working closely with him in the future,” he said.
“He has proven himself an effective and financially astute leader during his career and, despite the high calibre of candidates for this job, we feel he is the right person to continue to ensure the council delivers excellent services that provide real value for ratepayers’ money.”
Mr Carran has a legal and financial services background and also significant experience in local government. He is currently Chief Executive of the Waimate District Council and was previously Finance and Corporate Services Manager for the Southland District Council.
Mr Odey said: “I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank Peter Nixon for the huge contribution to the council over the 29 years he has worked here, the past five of which have been spent as Chief Executive.
“He has provided great leadership for the council and has overseen some major developments throughout the district during his time here”
“Mr Carran will be joining a council that is stable, well governed and well respected in the community, as well as respected nationally for its innovation and forward thinking, and we are sure he’ll enjoy coming to Timaru.”
