Riding the Trail with Kids this Summer

The Trail has sections which are perfect for families. You don't have to tackle the whole 315km, just make it short, easy and fun for the little ones. There are tons of places along the way where you can stop and stretch your legs or learn something new about the amazing wildlife or local history.

Quick Tips for a Fun Ride

  • Choose the Right Sections: Pūkaki Flats, Twizel to Lake Ōhau or Otematata to Kurow - these are mostly flat, scenic, and have plenty of places to stop and rest. Make sure you check out some of the small towns' own cycle trails and walkways too!
  • Keep it Short and Sweet: Little legs need breaks! Plan short rides with lots of time to explore and keep the distance manageable for the kids.
  • Pack the Essentials: Make sure everyone’s comfortable with the right gear—bikes, helmets, warm clothes and sunscreen are a must. Don’t forget snacks and a first aid kit too, just in case!
