If you are thinking of a trip down South, then the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail should be 'on your to do' list. A group of four friends, Trevor, Isabel, Warren and Vicky embarked on an exciting unforgettable riding adventure on the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail.
The trip, which stretched over 7 days, started on Monday 3 October to Tuesday 10 October 2022. Warren and Vicky came all the way down South from Auckland for this trip.
The team embarked on a self-guided Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail tour, using 3 e-bikes and 1 push power bike. ''I used my own hardtail mountain bicycle, which was not an e-bike, but I was able to keep pace with my teammates who were all using e-bikes'', said Isabel.
It took the team a full week to complete the trail, with a day's rest and sightseeing in Omarama. The distance covered by the squad varied each day, covering between 15- 60 kms per day, depending on the team's endurance for the day. The team agreed that tackling the trail over several shorter days made the trip more enjoyable and easier.
''We started off each morning with breakfast before setting out on a ride. For vehicle transfers, my son and his girlfriend met with us in Twizel and did a vehicle transfer for us and we also used a shuttle service on one of the days to get back to our base. Over the duration of the trip, we stayed at various places including Mount Cook Station, NZ Alpine Club Hut, Campground in Twizel, and we also stayed over with friends in Duntroon'', said Isabel.
The team alludes that every single day was a great day for them, and they experienced different magnificent scenery and must-see discoveries that the trail has to offer. ''Every day and every section of the trail is different from the Alps right down to the sea, which made our ride an excellent and satisfying ride and accomplishment'', commented Trevor.
The weather varied, but this was an exciting experience for the squad of four. The team got to cycle in the snow for the first time up in Twizel. no bad weather but wrong gear, and in our case, we were geared up for chilly conditions too'', said Isabel.
The track provides riders with a reasonable level of fitness and cycling skills an opportunity to experience a world-class trail. Ongoing maintenance of the track is excellent, and the route is well sign posted or fit for purpose, which impressed the cyclists. ''I was also impressed with the prompt repair of washouts so soon after recent washouts and weather events,” noted Trevor.
The key highlight of the trip for the team was tackling the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail with a great bunch of friends. There is a great community built around the trail, which made the trip enjoyable and worth it for the team. ''We were made to feel welcome by locals who embraced the trail and happily shared their knowledge and passion for their area and the trail from high country stations to the townships along the trails," said Trevor.
This was by far the top cycling trail the squad has journeyed on and it was the perfect trip to experience stunning landscapes, local food, and community. This is a trip the team will gladly embark on again.
