The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail, one of Ngā Haerenga Great Rides of New Zealand, has received the highest number of survey responses from Trail users compared to the other Great Rides, according to a recent report.
Since opening in 2013, The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail (A2O) has also contributed significantly to economic development in the region.
The latest New Zealand Cycle Trail Monthly Report Survey received 807 responses from Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail users between April 2022 and March 2023, the highest number of survey responses out of all the 23 Great Rides in New Zealand.
The results exceed the benchmarked minimum and targeted feedback responses, which have been set at 300 and 500 respectively, meaning the sample can be considered representative and good for making robust, insightful analysis.
"We're thrilled to see such a high level of engagement from Trail users," said A2O Trail Manager Robyn Hyde. "We take all feedback seriously, and we're committed to making the Trail the best it can be. We're grateful to everyone who has taken the time to provide feedback and we look forward to continuing to improve the Trail for future users."
Positive feedback that has been received month on month is centered on praise for the scenery, facilities, and experiences offered by the Trail. The on-road gravel sections, Trail surface and condition are cited as opportunities to improve the overall experience. The survey provides a quarterly economic contribution to the area analysis.
The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail leads the way with an annual economic contribution of $1,909.20 per person, which is double that of the $957.50 average calculated for all Great Rides Trails in New Zealand over the last 12 months.
The contribution per person per night over the last 12 months for the A2O was $299.60, compared to an average for all trails per person per night of $238.40. "We are excited to see remarkable levels of spending in the region. There is no doubt the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail has been a game-changer for economic well-being in the region," said Robyn Hyde. "We've seen a significant increase in visitor numbers since the Trail opened, and it's created new business opportunities for local entrepreneurs. We’d like to acknowledge all those who have contributed to providing exceptional experiences on the A2O."
