Set in a raw, inexplicably little-travelled landscape between the Southern Alps and the sea, the Waitaki lakes district remains one of New Zealand’s best kept secrets.
The nearby lakes of Tekapo and Pūkaki may be bone fide celebrities of the New Zealand travel scene, but head a little further south and you’ll find equally idyllic expanses of mountain-backed clear blue water – with far fewer people around to share them with.
