10 Sep 2024

#INFRASTRUCTURE MATTERS

The goal of this Contract was to install a new syphon with a pipeline under the Waihi River by open cut trenching to cater for future growth and provide additional resilience within the wastewater network if one or more of the existing syphons block. The new pipeline will:

  1. Provide a robust and efficient wastewater management system crucial for environmental health and safety.
  2. Minimise the risk of environmental contamination, preserving local ecosystems.
  3. Support future growth and development by handling increased demand.

Project Delivery

The Geraldine Sewer Syphon Upgrade project has reached its successful conclusion, marking a significant achievement for the community. This project, like many others, faced a variety of constraints that required careful management and strategic planning to overcome. The project was completed successfully, showcasing effective constraint management and the dedication of the project team.

The upgraded sewer syphon significantly improves Geraldine's wastewater management system, reducing overflow risks and enhancing service reliability.

1.The project adhered to a strict timeline to minimize community disruptions and ensure timely delivery. This required precise coordination and efficient task execution.
2.Clearly defined deliverables were met, with careful management to prevent scope creep that could affect the timeline and budget.
3.High-quality standards were maintained to meet current and future community needs, requiring diligent oversight and quality control.
4.Challenges in skilled labour and material availability were addressed through effective resource management strategies.
5.Potential risks, including technical challenges and environmental impacts, were mitigated through a comprehensive risk management plan.

Financial Report

  • Engineer’s Estimate: $1,070,000
  • Construction Total: $537,495.15

The breakdown for this is as follows:

  • Tender Submission: $425,194.90
  • Provisional Item $36,424.30 - for the disposal of contaminated materials.
  • Variations: $75,857.95 – there were 6 variations on this project
  1. Undercutting syphon inverts, importing and placement of overrun. - This was due to underground water issues
  2. Replacement fill to complete river embankment. - This was to fill the area where the contaminated materials were removed.
  3. Design and Build Required. - Investigation work for the “Talbot Street to the Ponds Upgrade”.
  4. De-beading of Internal Weld Joints. - This was not included in the tender. Being a sewer main, de-beading helps with better flow and prevents any materials from getting trapped which can cause blockages.
  5. Supply and Install a Concrete Manhole in place of the PE Manhole. - This is a cost-effective solution for when the new “Talbot Street to Ponds” sewer main needs to connect to this new manhole.
  6. Supply and spread topsoil across reinstatement areas. - Additional expense incurred  during the installation of the new sewer main connecting to the existing manhole on private land.
