The Drainage & Water and Land Transport units of Timaru District Council are collaborating to carry out projects along the Port loop Road. The existing watermain between Marine Parade and the “commuter” car park near the pedestrian over bridge will be replaced. In conjunction with that work, the temporary cycle lane and footpath will also be replaced with a new shared pathway, featuring planting on both sides. The existing kerb and channel on the railway side of the road will be realigned from the railway tracks to the Hayes Street intersection.

The existing watermain infrastructure is undersized and has reached the end of its useful life, so an upgrade is needed to improve firefighting capabilities in the Port area and to ensure a reliable water supply. Meanwhile, the street works will create a safer and more welcoming environment for pedestrians and cyclists, and improve the connection between the CBD and the trail network. The introduction of planting will also provide a clear separation between the railway tracks and motorists for the pathway users.

Port Loop Road will remain open for the duration of these works, and the pedestrian overbridge will remain open for the duration of the works. However, there will be no access to the “commuter” car park adjacent to the pedestrian over bridge while the works are being carried out. Alternate parking can be found in the car park under the Port Loop Bridge. Works will commence on Monday 31 July, 2023. The expected duration of these project is approximately 16 weeks. Works are intended to be undertaken during the hours of 7am and 6pm, Monday – Friday.
