#INFRASTRUCTURE MATTERS
Work will soon begin to replace the watermain on Evans Street from Grants Road to Waimataitai Street, as well as completing stormwater upgrades near the Showgrounds intersection. Residents, businesses, and commuters should anticipate significant disruptions in the area, including traffic delays, restricted access, and restricted turning movements at times. The team onsite will work diligently to minimise inconvenience where possible.
When exiting/entering the showgrounds consider using Bridge Street to help minimise the queue
When?
Work is set to begin the week of February 17, 2025, and will generally take place between 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. This project is expected to take several months, with completion anticipated in June 2025.
Why are we doing this?
This project is part of our planned water infrastructure upgrades and involves replacing the water main with a new alignment, moving it from the road carriageway to the footpath. This relocation will enable NZTA to improve the road surface on Evans Street while minimising future disruptions. Any necessary repairs and maintenance in the future can then be carried out on the footpath, reducing the impact on traffic in the long term.
What disruption can I expect?
- Due to the nature of this work on State Highway 1, significant delays are expected. Motorists are advised to avoid the area where possible.
- Two-lane traffic will be maintained on Evans Street; however, turning movements will be restricted.
- Sections of the footpath will be closed, with alternative pedestrian crossing facilities provided.
- The two bus stops on Evans Street between Grants Road and MacDonald Street will be closed for the duration of the work. Bus services will provide information on the new stop locations.
- No on-street parking will be permitted
Children, pets, and general safety.
Children and pets are often attracted to roadworks. To protect their safety, please ensure your children/pets are kept well back from works. It is a good idea to keep pets on a lead, in a fenced area or indoors while work is underway.
Will access to my property be affected?
Site Managers will liaise with residents to ensure that they can obtain access to their driveways.
Will my bins still be collected?
Unless otherwise notified, your bins will be collected as usual.
